Do you ever wish you just had an official list of all the movies you need to see? I find myself wishing it everytime I say, “Ooooh, wait, what’s that one movie that one person told us about that we need to watch?” So, as part of my New Year’s resolution, I’m doing it. I’m making a list of all the films I want to see. You should check it out. And when you do, feel free to make your own recommendations. My goal is to see every good film ever made.

Nice to see so many unusual and unfamiliar titles on your roster. I watched “History of Violence” New Year’s Eve and found it disappointing. Since it’s a Cronenberg movie, you know some scenes are bound to be gruesome (a task the director handles with apparent glee) but the family in the movie is so stock, so cliched…the initial scene with them is truly awful and they don’t much improve. The supporting players, particularly Ed Harris and Stephen McHattie, save the day. I’m hoping “Eastern Promises” will be better. “Very Long Engagement” is terrific, except for about the last two minutes of the movie. Have you seen “Lord of War”? One of the most cynical Hollywood movies I’ve ever watched and surprisingly good…
Cliff, thanks for the warning about “History of Violence”…I may take it off. I have not seen “Lord of War”, but your brief description makes me want to…
Have a great ‘08, Laura. My wife also recommends “Science of Sleep”, “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Matchstick Men”. I’m filling in gaps in my cinematic education with early silent movies, Murnau, 1930’s gangster films and, last night, Michael Caine in a fun 1970’s writer-turned-P.I. movie “Pulp…
Ah, yes, I loved Science of Sleep and Pan’s Labyrinth. I have not seen Matchstick Men, so it’s going on the list. Thanks again for your recommendations!
Are you gling to include any “old” movies you have not seen? This is a good idea for a list. I’ve talked about doing this and you have now motivated me to get on with it.
That’s a tough one…..can you give me some suggestions so I can add them?
I am putting a list on my blog.

The list is from Leonard Matlin’s top films compiled in 2000 and includes a synopsis of each. Surely many of my favorites are in that list.
